The Story of the 6th Battalion the Durham Light Infantry

FNH Audio presents this unabridged reading of the heroic story of a territorial battalion mobilised and sent overseas into the bloodiest conflict the world has ever known. They fought with distinction at the Somme and Arras through some of the most terrible and wasteful of battles. In one three month period this battalion alone lost 1,200 men and sixty officers. That it survived until the end of the war was nothing short of a miracle.

This history was written by the battalions Adjutant in 1919. A winner of the Military Cross for his actions in the combat, he relates in this work the fighting spirit of the battalion with a truthfulness that only comes with having been there.

A Visit to Three Fronts

FNH Audio presents an unabridged reading of Arthur Conan Doyle's non-fiction book, "A Visit to Three Fronts".

Written in 1916 during the peak of the first world war this book follows Mr Doyle as he visits first the British, Italian and finally the French sectors of the front. He meets with everyone from the highest national generals to the lowliest of front line troopers.

Although a work that can be classified as mid-war propaganda, it does offer some very interesting insights into the British mindset at this time of the war. The text reveals that the Italians were at this point of the war on the back foot and under pressure from the British public to perform better. It's also fascinating to realise that the British "stiff upper lip" was alive and well as shown when the author feels that he shouldn't show any emotion in front of foreigners. It also includes an interesting anecdote where a French general seems to think Sherlock Holmes is a real person.

On the Kings Service: Chaplain to the Forces, 1914-1916

FNH Audio presents an unabridged reading of On the Kings Service.
Rev. Innes found himself at a recruiting barracks when the first world war broke out. In this narrative ,he reports on how vast numbers of volunteers sweapt into the barracks, which found itself desperately short of material to clothe and equip so many men.

His duties soon move him over to France, where, in between his religious duties, he finds himself helping in the hospital with the vast number of wounded that came back from the lines. We then follow him towards the front, where his medical and religious duties combine to allow him to give comfort to the men and a mere medical hand could not procure.

The book is made up of anecdotal memories and occasional reports from the front that combine to give the listener a small insight into how a religious man lives and operates behind the front lines.
