Albert Wilmarth is literary professor at the Miskatonic University, who strongly disagrees with the recurrent rumours of strange life forms appearing in the hills of Vermont. He writes to the local paper to put across his point of view and becomes embroiled in a controversy.
Then he receives a letter from Henry Wentworth Akeley who begs that Wilmarth let the argument in the press die away. Intrigued by the request Wilmarth starts a prolonged correspondence with Akeley who says he has proof that there is something unnatural in the hills...
